Health and Safety Policy for Carpet Cleaning KT2
This Health and Safety Policy sets out how Carpet Cleaning KT2 manages health, safety and welfare in connection with our professional carpet and upholstery cleaning services. Our aim is to prevent injury and ill health to employees, clients, the public and others who may be affected by our work across the areas we serve.
Health and Safety Commitment
Carpet Cleaning KT2 is committed to providing and maintaining safe and healthy working conditions, safe systems of work and adequate welfare facilities for all employees and contractors. We also accept our responsibility for the health and safety of clients, visitors and members of the public who may be impacted by our activities at residential and commercial properties.
We comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry good practice. Health and safety considerations are integrated into our planning, decision making and day-to-day operations for all carpet, rug, upholstery and hard floor cleaning services.
Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety lies with the company management. Management will provide appropriate resources, information, instruction, supervision and training to ensure this policy is implemented and maintained.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for ensuring that cleaning operatives follow safe working procedures, use equipment correctly and immediately report any hazards, incidents or near misses.
All employees and contractors must:
Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions while at work.
Cooperate with Carpet Cleaning KT2 on health and safety matters, including following instructions, training and safe systems of work.
Use correctly all personal protective equipment and safety devices provided.
Report any hazards, defects, accidents or concerns to their line manager without delay.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Carpet Cleaning KT2 undertakes suitable and sufficient risk assessments for its cleaning operations. These identify significant hazards and evaluate the level of risk so that effective control measures can be implemented.
Risk assessments cover, as appropriate:
Use, transport and storage of cleaning chemicals.
Electrical equipment, including portable appliance use.
Slip, trip and fall hazards caused by wet floors, hoses and cables.
Manual handling of machinery, water and materials.
Work in clients homes, offices and shared access areas.
Where necessary, written safe systems of work and method statements are produced. Employees are trained in these procedures and must follow them at all times.
COSHH and Chemical Safety
Carpet Cleaning KT2 manages the use of cleaning chemicals in line with recognised control of substances hazardous to health principles. We use reputable products suitable for professional carpet and upholstery cleaning and aim to select low hazard alternatives where effective.
For each relevant substance, safety information is obtained from suppliers and used to carry out assessments. Control measures may include:
Limiting quantities carried and stored on vehicles and on site.
Using appropriate dilution and application methods.
Providing personal protective equipment such as gloves, eye protection and protective footwear.
Ensuring adequate ventilation during and after cleaning.
Keeping chemicals clearly labelled and stored securely when not in use.
Employees receive training in the safe handling, use, storage and disposal of chemicals, including emergency procedures in the event of spills, splashes or accidental exposure.
Equipment Safety
All carpet cleaning machinery, vacuum cleaners, extraction units and associated tools are maintained in a safe condition. Regular inspections are carried out and defective equipment is taken out of service until repaired or replaced.
Only trained personnel are permitted to operate powered equipment. Electrical leads are routed to minimise trip hazards and kept clear of water. Residual current devices are used where appropriate.
Manual Handling
Carpet Cleaning KT2 recognises that manual handling of machines, hoses, water containers and furniture can present a risk of injury. Staff are trained in correct lifting and handling techniques and are encouraged to use mechanical aids or team lifting whenever practical.
Work is planned to reduce unnecessary carrying and to position vehicles as close as safely possible to access points. Heavy or awkward items are not moved unless it is safe to do so, and clients are informed when items cannot be moved without risk.
Slips, Trips and Falls
Cleaning activities can increase slip and trip risks due to wet surfaces, spray, hoses and electrical cables. Our control measures include:
Using clear verbal warnings to occupants about wet floors and trip hazards.
Positioning hoses and cables to avoid walkways wherever possible.
Cleaning up spillages promptly and drying floors as far as reasonably practicable.
Wearing appropriate non slip footwear.
Personal Protective Equipment
Personal protective equipment is provided where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means. Typical PPE for carpet cleaning work can include protective gloves, eye protection, respiratory protection where required, and appropriate footwear.
Employees are instructed in correct use, limitations, storage and replacement of PPE and must use it as directed.
Training, Information and Supervision
All staff receive induction training on health and safety, including emergency arrangements, incident reporting and safe working practices. Task specific training is provided for carpet and upholstery cleaning processes, use of machinery, chemical handling and client site procedures.
Refresher training is given periodically or when changes to equipment, products or working methods occur. Supervision is proportionate to the experience and competence of each employee.
Accidents, Incidents and First Aid
All accidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported promptly to management. Details are recorded and investigated to identify root causes and prevent recurrence.
First aid arrangements are in place, and suitable first aid supplies are carried in vehicles or available on site. Employees are informed of the first aid procedures relevant to their work.
Working in Client Premises
When working in occupied premises, Carpet Cleaning KT2 staff respect the safety, privacy and security of clients and other occupants. Before starting work, hazards such as loose flooring, restricted access, children, pets and fragile items are discussed with the client where possible.
Staff will not obstruct fire exits, will keep work areas tidy and will remove equipment and waste at the end of the job. Any damage or concerns identified during work are reported immediately.
Monitoring, Review and Policy Availability
Health and safety performance is monitored through site checks, equipment inspections, incident statistics and staff feedback. This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and revised as necessary to reflect changes in legislation, guidance, work activities or organisational structure.
This policy is communicated to all employees and is available to clients and other interested parties on request. Carpet Cleaning KT2 expects everyone associated with our services to support and uphold the standards set out in this document.
